January is the best month of the year to reset your home. The decorations come down, the house feels bare, and motivation is high. The trick is to turn that motivation into something that lasts longer than the first weekend.
This plan spreads the reset over four weeks: two for clearing, one for cleaning, one for building routines that keep it that way.
Save to PinterestWeek 1: put the holidays away properly
- Pack decorations in labeled boxes, broken items go straight out
- Find homes for gifts - and let go of something old for every new thing (one in, one out)
- Clear out the fridge, freezer and pantry of holiday leftovers
- Recycle packaging, gift bags you won't reuse and cards you don't need to keep
- Wash the guest bedding and table linen and put them away
Week 2: declutter room by room
Spend 20-30 minutes a day on one area. Don't try to do the whole house in a weekend - that's how resets fail.
| Day | Area |
|---|---|
| Monday | Kitchen cabinets and drawers |
| Tuesday | Bathroom and medicine cabinet |
| Wednesday | Wardrobe and shoes |
| Thursday | Living room shelves and media |
| Friday | Paperwork and the "everything" drawer |
| Weekend | Kids' rooms or hobby space, then one donation run |
The 30-day declutter challenge has a full day-by-day list if you'd like more structure.
Label maker
Labels make the new order obvious to everyone in the house.
Week 3: deep clean while it's empty
With less stuff in the way, deep cleaning is fast. Pick one area per day:
- Inside the oven and the range hood filter
- Fridge shelves and drawers
- Bathroom grout and shower head
- Under the sofa and beds
- Windows and window sills
The monthly deep cleaning checklist covers every job in detail.
Week 4: install routines that stick
A reset only lasts if there's a system behind it. Start with just two habits:
- A 15-minute evening reset - kitchen, living room, entry. See the full routine.
- A weekly cleaning schedule - one small focus a day. See the weekly schedule.
Add a third habit only after the first two feel automatic.
Make it easier with a few tools
A couple of simple products make the new order easier to keep:
Clear storage bins
See what's inside without opening every box.
Drawer dividers
Keep the drawers you just decluttered from turning into junk drawers again.
Why most January resets fail
- Too much at once. A whole house in one weekend leads to exhaustion and a half-finished mess.
- Organizing before decluttering. Buying bins for things you don't need just hides the problem.
- No routine afterwards. Without a daily reset, clutter comes back within weeks.
Go slow, finish each step, and then protect the result with small daily habits.
