Clothes are the hardest thing to declutter. Everything has a "maybe one day" attached to it. These seven questions take the emotion out of it, one item at a time.

Before you start

Take everything out of one category - say, all your tops - and put it on the bed. Seeing the whole pile at once is what makes decisions easier. Work one category at a time: tops, trousers, dresses, jackets, shoes.

Have three bags ready: donate, sell, recycle.

The 7 questions

1. Have I worn it in the last year?

If not, and it isn't a special-occasion or seasonal item, it goes.

2. Does it fit right now?

Not "after I lose some weight", not "once I've had it altered". Clothes that don't fit today make getting dressed stressful.

3. Would I buy it again today?

If you saw it in a shop now, would you pay for it? If not, let it go.

4. Does it need repair I won't do?

Be honest. If it's been in the repair pile for months, it's not getting fixed.

5. Do I feel good in it?

If you always change after putting it on, it's not working.

6. Do I have something similar I prefer?

Five black t-shirts? Keep the two best.

7. Am I keeping it out of guilt?

Gifts and expensive mistakes are the hardest. The money is spent either way - letting it go to someone who'll wear it is the better outcome.

The hanger trick

Not sure about some pieces? Turn all your hangers backwards. When you wear something, hang it back the normal way. In six months, everything still backwards is something you don't wear.

Slim velvet hangers

Matching slim hangers make the decluttered closet look calm and fit more.
