A messy pantry costs money. When you can't see what you have, you buy duplicates, forget what's at the back and throw out expired food. An organized pantry fixes all three - and it works whether you have a walk-in pantry or two kitchen cabinets.
Save to PinterestStep 1: empty and check dates
Take everything out. Throw away anything expired, and put anything that's close to its date in an "eat this week" pile. Wipe the shelves.
Step 2: create zones
Group food by how you use it, not just what it is:
- Breakfast - cereal, oats, spreads
- Baking - flour, sugar, baking powder
- Pasta, rice and grains
- Cans and jars
- Snacks
- Sauces and oils
Keep daily items at eye level, heavy items low, and rarely used things up high.
Step 3: decant the basics
Square, clear containers save space (round bags and boxes waste the corners), keep food fresh and show you when you're running low.
Airtight pantry containers
Square containers stack neatly and keep dry food fresh.
You don't need to decant everything. Start with what you use most: pasta, rice, oats, flour, sugar, cereal.
Step 4: use height
Shelf risers turn one shelf of cans into two visible rows.
Can and spice risers
Every can and jar visible at a glance.
Turntables in corners make jars spin to the front.

Baskets hold loose items like snack packets or sauce sachets.

Step 5: label
Labels on containers and shelf edges keep the system working when someone else puts the shopping away. Include the expiry date on decanted food.
Step 6: first in, first out
When you unpack groceries, put new items behind the old ones. It's the single habit that stops food expiring at the back.
Step 7: keep a running list
A list on the pantry door - or a printable pantry inventory - means you write things down the moment they run out. Shopping gets faster and you stop buying your fifth jar of paprika.
The Home Reset Planner includes a printable pantry inventory page, and the fridge organization guide covers the other half of your food storage.
